What Is an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is a specialized type of endodontic surgery to treat persistent infections or inflammation at the tip of a tooth’s root. We typically recommend this procedure when a previous root canal has not fully resolved the issue. In such cases, bacteria or inflamed tissue may remain at the root apex. Left untreated, this can cause increasing discomfort and jeopardize the surrounding bone and tissue.
How the Procedure Works
The procedure involves four main steps, including:
- Incision : The process begins with a small incision in the gum tissue near the affected tooth. This allows access to the underlying bone and the tip of the root.
- Removal : The endodontic surgeon then removes the infected tissue and a small portion of the affected root.
- Clean & Seal : After thoroughly cleaning the area, the end of the root canal is sealed with a biocompatible material designed to prevent reinfection.
- Sutures : Finally, the gum is sutured back into place. Then, the bone is left to heal and regenerate around the sealed root tip.

Why Choose an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy may be ideal for patients with continued symptoms after a root canal. Likewise, it may prove best when an infection has returned. Dr. Yadegar’s expertise and cutting-edge techniques provide key patient benefits via:
- Faster recovery
- A minimally invasive experience
- Reduced discomfort
