How Cracked Teeth Occur

Cracked teeth can occur from normal wear and tear, biting into something hard, and is also very common in patients that grind or clench their teeth. Cracked teeth symptoms include pain to chewing, release of biting pressure, and temperature sensitivity. Cracked teeth usually display with pain that comes and goes, making diagnosis more complicated.

Why Cracked Teeth Cause Pain

The reason why a cracked tooth causes so much pain and irritation is due to the pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue found under the harder layers of a tooth, like the enamel and dentin. When a tooth becomes cracked, it compromises the structure of the tooth and can cause increased motion. As a result, chewing and biting can cause the nerves inside the pulp to become irritated and painful. While the pain may start off on a come and go basis, if left unchecked, it can escalate to constant, severe pain.

Traumatic Injuries/Internal Bleaching: Trauma to the Mouth

Trauma to the mouth can cause teeth to be pushed out of its original position. These teeth should be repositioned and stabilized before root canal treatment is initiated. If a root canal is not performed on the impacted teeth, they may become discolored and present darker than the surrounding teeth. At our office, we can treat these teeth internally by bleaching them so they may change back to their original coloring.

Cracked Tooth Treatment

There are different stages to a cracked tooth along with different types of cracks. If the crack is above the gum line, then it can be treated with a root canal and a crown. Sometimes the damage is too severe and the tooth will have to be extracted. In some cases a split tooth can occur and the tooth can be partially saved instead of fully extracted.
